Sikkim Announces A New Tourist Entry Fee

Sikkim Entry Fee

Sikkim, the smallest state in Northeast India, is known for its stunning attractions like Gurudongmar Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world at 17,800 feet, Nathu La Pass and more. With its beautiful landscapes, delicious food, and friendly locals, it’s a wonderful destination to visit. If you’re planning a trip, there’s an important update: starting in March 2025, visitors will need to pay a small entry fee of INR 50. This new rule, part of the Sikkim Registration of Tourist Trade Rules 2025, has been introduced by the state government to support sustainable tourism and manage the growing number of visitors.

Authorities will use the Sikkim entry fee to improve Sikkim’s tourism infrastructure. This includes better roads, maintaining cleanliness, and protecting the region’s cultural and natural beauty. The aim is to provide a sustainable travel experience for visitors.

The entry fee is applicable for everyone coming to Sikkim, except for children under five and those on official government business. This fee is a one-time payment, allowing for a stay of up to 30 days. If visitors leave and come back within 30 days, they will need to pay the fee again. The process will be easy, as the government will collect the fee when guests check in at hotels in Sikkim.

How To Reach Sikkim

Sikkim is conveniently reachable for travelers from various parts of India. The closest airport is Bagdogra, and from there, you can drive to Gangtok. The journey from the airport to Sikkim takes approximately 4 hours. It covers a distance of 126 km to the city of Gangtok.

If you’re considering a train journey, traveling to Sikkim is the most straightforward option by rail. The two primary railway stations serving Sikkim are Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri. The travel time will vary based on where you start your journey, but it’s certainly a cost-effective choice.
