What Is Ram Navami And Its Significance

Ram Navami is known by other names as well such as Rama Navami and Sri Rama Navami. The day is celebrated throughout India as it is believed that Lord Rama was born on this day. He is considered to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and is himself a revered deity.

As per Hindu mythology, Lord Rama was born on the ninth day (Navami) of the Shukla Paksha of the Hindu month of Chaitra in Ayodhya.

Lord Rama is an important deity in Hinduism, with many scriptures and epics based on his life.

Lord Rama is considered to be the Maryada Purushottam (ideal man) in Hindu mythology. He was the oldest of the four children born to King Dashrath, and was later sent to exile for 14 years by his stepmother Kaikeyi.

In his 14-year long exile with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman, he faces many obstacles. In fact, it is during the exile that King Ravana abducts Sita. How Lord Rama brings back Sita and defeats Ravana forms the rest of the Ramayana.

How And Why We Celebrate Rama Navami

Ram Navami 2025 will be celebrated like each year to honor Lord Rama and his principles and values. Being an ideal man according to the Hindu scriptures, many devotees pray to the Lord to inculcate his values in them.

Many temples and religious institutions organize bhajans and kirtans (devotional songs) singing praise for Lord Rama and narrating his life.

Believers of Lord Rama usually observe a fast and abstain from any vices – smoking, drinking, or consuming meat.

The fast usually begins from sunrise and ends by sunset on that day. They dress up in bright clothes and visit temples to pay respects to Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lord Hanuman.

Many temples also conduct havans (a sacrificial fire offering) and elaborate poojas to celebrate Ram Navami. They also conduct Ram Katha recitals where priests and devotees recite stories of the Indian epic Ramayana in a melodious manner.

Some devotees also celebrate the festival by adorning a little statue of Lord Rama in auspicious clothes and placing it in a palanquin or a cradle. They then sing devotional songs and aartis, followed by a ceremonial wedding of Lord Rama and Sita.

In the evening, especially in towns and villages, Ramlila celebrations take place. A Ramlila is usually a dramatic re-enactment of the entire Ramayana by artist troupes in villages and towns.

The entire performance can be summed up in an hour or can take even days. This also includes music and dance, making it an entertaining event on Ram Navami.

Many villages also organize vibrant fairs and markets where the Ramlila troupes perform, making it an enjoyable affair for the entire village.
