Neelkanth is one such town that isn’t much-known outside its own district, but it is home to one of India’s most sacred temples. Situated in the serene Uttarakhand, this temple town is a paradise that’s less explored, but is sure to offer tourists and spiritual seekers with a worthy experience. Here’s your ultimate travel guide to Neelkanth!

History Of Neelkanth

The temple town is situated in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, near Rishikesh. Nestled amidst three picturesque valleys, Vishnukoot, Brahmakoot, and Manikoot, and situated on the confluence of the Madhumati and Pankaja rivers, this small settlement is Uttarakhand’s best kept secret.

The temple town’s name originates from a profound mythological event in Hinduism called the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean). The gods and demons both wanted to obtain the divine Amrit, a magical elixir that granted immortality. As the gods and demons churned the ocean for Amrit, various other divine objects and entities were obtained. One of them was Halahal, which was feared as the most potent venom. To save everyone from the effects of the poison, Lord Shiva drank it himself, earning him the name ‘Neelkanth’. The name literally translates to ‘blue throat’. It is believed that the place got its name as the event of Shiva drinking the Halahal occurred here.
