7.5 KM Breach Candy–Worli Coastal Promenade Set To Open On June 15

Coastal Promenade

For those who enjoy walking in Mumbai and are on the lookout for new scenic routes, we have news for you. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to open a highly anticipated coastal promenade along the Mumbai Coastal Road by 15th June. This 7.5-kilometre walkway, stretching from Priyadarshini Park at Breach Candy to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, is 20 meters wide. It aims to be a haven for walkers, joggers, and cyclists.

To facilitate easy access, the promenade will include 20 underpasses at 400-meter intervals. It will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross the waterfront seamlessly. The grand opening is scheduled for June 15, providing Mumbaikars with a refreshing new public space.

Covering a total area of 17 hectares, the promenade comprises a 12-hectare pathway constructed by the BMC. It also includes a 5-hectare median being enhanced by Tata Sons. AECOM, an infrastructure consultancy, undertook the overall design and planning.

Coastal Promenade Also Aims To Feature Fountains, Yoga Paths And More

A significant feature of the promenade is its focus on greenery, with around 70% of the area designated for landscaping. The remaining 30% will include paved pathways, dedicated cycling lanes, seating sections, and various public facilities. This initiative aligns with the BMC’s commitment to sustainable development. It aims to set a benchmark for waterfront projects in India.

To ensure ongoing maintenance and improvement, the BMC has sought Expressions of Interest (EOI) from private companies to manage the 70-hectare public space through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Among five contenders, Reliance Industries was chosen for fulfilling all criteria without requiring any incentives. Following administrative approval, Reliance will present a comprehensive plan for landscaping, parks, jogging and cycling tracks, public plazas, and more. A senior BMC official noted that the project’s advancement will depend on Reliance’s final proposal.

Planned features for this vibrant public area include a Miyawaki forest, musical fountains, butterfly gardens, yoga paths, outdoor gyms, parks for senior citizens, children’s play areas, and open-air theaters.
